Cai Nowicki
Having high cholesterol can lead to various heart and health problems, resulting in a reduction of both quality and length of life. Therefore, for patients with high cholesterol, lowering cholesterol levels is very important to continued good health. Thankfully, reducing cholesterol levels is actually not a difficult process. Some simple diet and lifestyle changes can make a major difference.
For many people, adding certain foods to one's diet is enough to reduce cholesterol levels. There are many delicious dishes that can have the effect of lowering cholesterol levels. Many people are aware that adding more fiber to their diet will benefit their cholesterol levels. High-fiber foods that can reduce cholesterol levels include oatmeal, bran, and whole-wheat bread. There are also tasty high-fiber fruits such as bananas and apples that will benefit the heart and cardiovascular system. Besides fiber, there are protein and fat sources that are good for reducing cholesterol, such as grilled or broiled fish, nuts, and olive oil. In general, if lowered cholesterol is the point of the dietary changes, the diet should be focused on increasing fiber and reducing saturated fats.
Often being overweight and having high cholesterol go hand-in-hand. One great method for lowering cholesterol is to lose some of the excess weight. It is not always even necessary to get down to a so-called "ideal weight or BMI. Just losing five or ten of those extra pounds can result in a lower cholesterol score. The lifestyle changes that go along with attempting to lose weight, such as getting more exercise and reducing alcohol intake, will also have an effect on cholesterol levels. Combining lifestyle changes in this way will not only result in lowered cholesterol but a healthier body overall.
Getting lower cholesterol is by no means an impossible goal. It generally only requires a few changes to the foods eaten and the activities done every day. These types of changes can benefit anyone, regardless of current cholesterol levels or general health.
